  11.                                 Introduction

  13. Since the beginning of the telephone revolution, there have been ways to
  14. trace a line. When there used to be operators with plugs and huge switchboards,
  15. they could manually trace the line. Then came the crossbar switching, in which
  16. they could trace the line three ways: Lock-In tracing, manual tracing
  17. (Never done, anymore), or time syncronization.
  18. The ESS (Electronic Switching System) brought an "Impossible"
  19. to beat tracing mechanism, ANI.

  28.                       Chapter One : Lock-In tracing
  29.  
  30. Lock-In tracing is exactly what the name says. It is a type of tracing most
  31. often used by the FBI. The method of which Lock-In works is quite simple.When
  32. a conversation is going on, there is voltage going through the line to keep i
  33. t open for those people talking. When lock-in is used, after the caller-to-be-
  34. traced hangs up, a special FBI machine sends voltage down the line to make the P
  35. hone Co's machines think that the line is still being used. Then that gives the
  36. FBI time to trace manually.

  40.                                 The DIFT Box
  41.  
  42. There is only one way that I have heard of beating Lock-In. If you keep picking
  43. up the phone and hanging up, and the line doesn't go to a dialtone,there
  44. is a chance that you are being traced. The way to stop this is to send a curre
  45. nt down the lin, too.First you have to find a corner in your house where the
  46. phone wire is running along. Then you can install 'Billy Heif's Peachy Tracer Bre
  47. aker', or simply, "The DIFT box". Here's the simple schmatics for it:

  58. Where you see the plus and minus, you hook up a big 6 or 12 volt battery
  59. Make sure you put a switch in there somewhere, so you can switch it on fast.
  60. Hook the + and - to all the lines going out.I think that will work,I am pretty
  61. sure. Try testing it out first. While you are talking to one of your buds,click
  62. it on.                        Chapter Two : Manual Tracing

  64. Manual tracing is just following a line back to its source. I am not talking
  65. loterally,just following it from circuits.This takes a HELL of a long time
  66. like 10-20 mins or more. The only way to prevent this is to make your calls
  67. short and sweet so they don't have time. Of course, if you get Locked-In,
  68. you should click on yoir DIFT rox yor ubouf 30 seconds.

  72.                    Chapter Three : Time Syncro Tracing
  73.  
  74. Time Syncro Tracing is very simple. Let's say Bob Retard is getting 100
  75. prank calls a night,Now Bob calls up the phone company,who sends out
  76. a techie with a clock syncronized to the phone co.'s clock. When Bob gets
  77. his prank call that night,he just hits the button that stops the clock.Then he calls
  78. the company and tells m`┤┤e`┤ime`┤hat`¿e`ºot`┤he`úalln T╪ey Σun it through their computers and come up
  79. with a call made at that exact time, and where it came from.This tracing is
  80. instoppable,

  83. so just don't crank someone all the time. B
  84. ut if you do it on some night like Friday, when there are a million calls going
  85.  
  86. on at once, then it is pretty safe.

  91.             Chapter Four : Automatic Number Identification (ANI)
  92.  
  93.         Automatic Number Identification (ANI) is a tracing mechanism available O
  94. NLY in ESS areas. ANI works because the YOUR phone co.'s computer sends a few di
  95. gital-encoded numbers to the DESTINATION'S phone co's computer. Then the other c
  96. omputer, and yo
  97.                ±àur co.'s computer knows INSTANTLY where it is coming from.

  99.         Ways to tell if you have ESS: (Stolen from some G-File)

  101.           1) 911 service
  102.           2) dialtone first at payphones
  103.           3) call waiting and that shit
  104.  
  105.         Well, ANI is not absolutely foolproof. I guess you could make a cheesebo
  106. x to get around it or something. It would not be hard to do that.

  108. √        There was an incident back in March, 1988, concerning ANI. Some idiot
  109. introduced the idea of the "Sprint Back Door", which gave you access to call any
  110. where in the world for "Free". Little did they know that Sprint's ANI machine wa
  111. s working hard, a
  112.                  nd everyone was sent a cill at the end of the month. So, watch
  113. it with this thing. I think there used to be a number you could call, and the th
  114. ing would call you back, using ANI. Pretty sure it's gone now.
